Envirowest was retained by the Fisheries and Oceans Canada to develop a management plan for the Courtenay River estuary. Under the federal Oceans Act, DFO is mandated to lead in the development and implementation of management plans for all activities in or affecting coastlines and estuaries. Such initiatives are undertaken in collaboration with other agencies and affected communities and individuals.

Courtney River
The Courtenay River Estuary Management Plan is defined by “Volume 1. Integrated Management Plan”. The Integrated Management Plan presents policy statements, administrative structures and action programs for managing the Courtenay River estuary. “Volume 2. Consultation Process” provides a summary of the consultation activities and includes key documents produced during the consultation process. “Volume 3. Resource Values” provides background information on fish and wildlife resources and land and water uses associated with the Courtenay River estuary.

Action Programs are defined by the Management Plan. Action Programs implemented as part of this planning exercise include a Habitat and Development Classification System and the Preliminary Design of several Habitat Enhancement/Restoration/Creation projects.
